Fix Faulty Traffic Lights Before Installing Cameras, Efia Odo Urges Authorities

Efia Odo Urges Authorities2

Ghanaian actress and socialite Efia Odo has questioned the priorities behind the Ghana Police Service’s TRAFFITECH-GH program, calling on authorities to repair malfunctioning traffic lights before investing in enforcement cameras.

In a post on X on September 30, she acknowledged the value of the initiative but challenged the decision to fund new technology while existing traffic infrastructure remained faulty.

“Traffic lights don’t even work, but somehow y’all have a budget to install cameras?” she wrote.

Her comments have added to discussions about the need to improve basic road infrastructure alongside efforts to strengthen traffic enforcement.

TRAFFITECH-GH is designed to use cameras, radar and other digital equipment to detect traffic offences, including speeding and driving through red lights.

According to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, personnel will review captured footage before Electronic Notices of Violation are sent to vehicle owners by SMS. The department says this verification process is intended to prevent incorrect penalties.

The system will complement existing police enforcement rather than replace officers’ work on the roads.

Full implementation, initially scheduled for October 1, has been postponed to November 1, 2026. Police said the additional month would allow more public education on how the program operates, the offences it detects and the electronic notices motorists may receive.

Drivers and vehicle owners have been encouraged to familiarize themselves with the system before enforcement begins.
