Renowned Nigerian gospel musician and music executive Asu Ekiye has announced the end of his 28-year marriage to Kunemofa Asu.
The award-winning singer, popularly known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta,” disclosed the development in a statement titled “Public Notice,” which he shared across his social media platforms.
Although the announcement has only now been made public, Ekiye explained that the marriage effectively ended in 2025. He said he delayed informing the public to allow sufficient time for personal reflection, clarity and emotional processing.
“I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to Kunemofa Asu has come to an end,” part of his statement read.
Reflecting on the nearly three-decade union, the gospel musician described the experience as a journey marked by growth, lessons and reflection.
“I choose to close this chapter with grace, gratitude and dignity, while looking ahead to the possibilities of a new season,” he added.
Ekiye did not disclose the circumstances that led to the breakdown of the marriage. His statement instead focused on bringing the chapter to a respectful conclusion while preparing for the next stage of his life.
The couple married in 1998 and have four children together. Their separation ends a union that lasted almost three decades.
Asu Ekiye rose to prominence in the early 2000s through his distinctive blend of indigenous Niger Delta sounds and contemporary gospel music. He became widely known for songs such as Woekilemo, which helped establish him as an influential figure in Nigeria’s gospel music industry.
His musical career has earned him several recognitions, including Channel O Music Video Awards. Beyond his work as a performer, Ekiye has remained a prominent advocate for Niger Delta culture and indigenous gospel music.
The announcement has attracted attention from fans and members of the gospel music community, many of whom have expressed support for the singer and his family.
