Ghanaian singer Gyakie has recounted a painful experience in which she was booed and physically removed from the stage during a performance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Speaking on the On The Line Podcast, the award-winning musician described the incident as “very terrible” and said it left her crying backstage.
The performance took place during Republic Hall Week in 2019, when Gyakie was still studying Business Administration at KNUST and working to establish herself as an artist.
At the time, she had released her debut reggae single, Love Is Pretty, and was beginning to receive encouraging reactions from classmates and listeners online.
However, her reception at the live event was significantly different.
Gyakie explained that the sound system suddenly went off while she was performing, leaving her without instrumental backing. Her microphone also stopped working, making it impossible for her to continue the performance effectively.
As she remained stranded on stage in silence, sections of the audience became impatient and began clapping and chanting “Away!” to demand that she leave.
According to the singer, some people eventually pulled her off the stage before she could complete her set.
The experience was particularly painful because it sharply contrasted with the positive comments and support she had been receiving on social media.
Gyakie said she broke down in tears immediately after reaching backstage, overwhelmed by the embarrassment and hostility she had encountered.
Despite the setback, she continued pursuing music and eventually became one of Ghana’s most recognized contemporary female artists.
Her story highlights the unpredictable challenges emerging musicians often face and demonstrates how an early public failure does not necessarily determine the future of an artist’s career.
