Ghanaian highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has raised concerns about the quality of sachet water sold on the local market after reportedly discovering discoloration in some products stored at his home.
The musician shared footage on social media showing what appeared to be clear sachets alongside greenish, discolored ones from the same bundle. He identified the product as Voltic Cool and called for urgent attention from regulatory authorities.
Kwabena Kwabena explained that he had stopped using tap water for cooking because of concerns about its safety and had turned to sachet water as an alternative. Discovering what appeared to be a quality problem with the packaged water, he said, left him deeply worried.
He warned consumers to examine sachet water carefully before using it for drinking or cooking, noting that contaminated water could expose the public to serious health risks.
The footage generated widespread discussion on social media. Some commentators suggested that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or poor storage conditions could encourage algae growth, while others raised concerns about production standards and supervision at local packaging facilities.
These explanations have not been independently confirmed, and no laboratory findings establishing the cause of the discoloration have been made public.
Kwabena Kwabena called on the Food and Drugs Authority and the Ghana Standards Authority to investigate the matter, inspect sachet-water production facilities and ensure strict compliance with purification and packaging requirements.
He also urged regulators to verify whether approved sterilization systems, including ultraviolet treatment equipment, are being properly used at production plants.
The musician’s concerns have renewed public discussion about the safety of packaged drinking water and the need for stronger monitoring of production, transportation and storage conditions.
The FDA, Ghana Standards Authority and the company named by the musician had not publicly responded to the concerns at the time of the report.
