Robert Owusu, father of Ghanaian Afrobeats and highlife musician Lasmid, has admitted that he never expected his son to become the successful recording artiste the family is known for today.
Speaking in an interview that has gained attention on social media, Owusu reflected on Lasmid’s unexpected journey into the Ghanaian music industry and the different talents within their family.
Lasmid, whose real name is Nathaniel Owusu, is the fourth of five children and one of two boys in the family.
According to his father, Lasmid’s elder brother initially appeared more likely to pursue a professional music career because he had a strong interest in music and possessed an impressive singing voice.
“Lasmid is my fourth-born. I have five children. His name is Nathaniel Owusu. I have two boys; that is Lasmid and his elder brother,” Owusu explained.
He added that he expected the older son to become the family’s musician because of his natural vocal ability and deeper involvement in music.
Owusu said Lasmid’s eventual breakthrough surprised him, as the young musician demonstrated the determination, songwriting ability and consistency required to build a successful career.
Lasmid first attracted national attention after winning the eighth season of the MTN Hitmaker music reality competition.
The victory provided a platform for him to develop his craft and introduce his distinctive sound to a wider Ghanaian audience.
He later achieved mainstream success with songs including Friday Night, Running and Puputu. The popularity of those releases helped establish him as one of Ghana’s prominent Afropop and highlife performers.
Lasmid has also earned recognition for his melodic delivery, songwriting and ability to create memorable hooks, leading to collaborations with several established musicians.
His father’s comments highlight the unpredictable nature of talent and success, as the child who was not initially expected to pursue music eventually emerged as the family’s nationally recognized star.
