Veteran Ghanaian musician Mzbel has rejected longstanding claims that she was raped during a chaotic performance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2005.
Speaking in a September 2026 interview with Kafui Dey, the singer clarified that she lost consciousness during the commotion but was not sexually assaulted.
According to Mzbel, no one touched her private parts during the incident. She described what happened as an accident and firmly dismissed contrary accounts that have circulated online for more than two decades.
The incident occurred on October 1, 2005, when Mzbel was invited to perform at KNUST as part of an Art Society Week celebration. The program reportedly descended into chaos, exposing the musician to intense public scrutiny and criticism.
Mzbel said some critics continue to refer to the episode in attempts to bully her or cause emotional distress. She maintained, however, that the persistent rumours no longer affect her.
Following the incident, Mzbel and her management reportedly sued KNUST for 600 million old cedis, alleging a breach of contract and failures in the security arrangements for the event.
The musician said the public backlash surrounding the performance resulted in her being unfairly labelled and targeted during the early years of her career.
Her latest comments seek to correct the public record and end speculation about the circumstances surrounding the 2005 incident.
