Ghanaian gospel musician Obaapa Christy has shared an emotional account of her final conversation with Auntie Mabel, revealing that they spoke only hours before her sudden death.
According to the singer, Auntie Mabel called her on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 22, 2026, while receiving medical attention at a hospital. Nothing about the conversation reportedly suggested that the situation was life-threatening.
Speaking during a radio interview, Obaapa Christy said she initially believed Auntie Mabel was at the hospital for a routine medical visit. The two therefore continued discussing an outstanding business matter without any sense of alarm.
Obaapa Christy eventually ended the conversation to allow her to rest, expecting that they would speak again after she returned home.
“Maa, I’m still waiting on your call,” she recalled telling Auntie Mabel before they ended the conversation.
The gospel singer said she expected the promised call to come later so they could conclude their unfinished discussion. However, at about 4 p.m. that same day, she received the devastating news that Auntie Mabel had died.
Obaapa Christy described the news as shocking because Auntie Mabel had sounded well during their conversation. She said she had no reason to believe that their exchange would be the last time they spoke.
The singer, who referred to the deceased as her sister, has since expressed her grief through radio interviews and social media tributes.
Auntie Mabel’s death has also sent shockwaves through sections of Ghana’s entertainment industry. Her passing occurred about nine weeks after she celebrated her 50th birthday in May 2026, an event Obaapa Christy reportedly attended.
Photos and videos from the celebration have resurfaced on social media as friends, relatives and admirers reflect on the joyful moments they shared with her.
The loss has been particularly difficult for members of the family, who are reportedly coping with a series of recent bereavements. Ghanaian actress Vivian Jill is among the relatives who have publicly mourned Auntie Mabel and appealed for prayers and support for the family.
Tributes have continued to pour in from entertainers, friends and members of the public, with many expressing disbelief over the sudden death.
Details about the cause of death and funeral arrangements had not been publicly announced at the time of reporting.
