Veteran Kumawood actor Oboy Siki has clarified that any public support he extends to actress and media personality Nana Ama McBrown is motivated by his loyalty to comedian Dr Likee, rather than personal admiration for her work.
Speaking during an interview on Aluta FM, the outspoken actor said his close relationship with Dr Likee, known privately as Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi and popularly as Ras Nene or Akabenezer, was the only connection behind his support for McBrown.
“I’m supporting McBrown because of Dr Likee. I wouldn’t support McBrown if not for Dr Likee,” he stated.
Oboy Siki Acknowledges Dr Likee’s Contribution
Oboy Siki has repeatedly praised Dr Likee for creating opportunities for Kumawood actors after Ghana’s once-vibrant local-language film industry experienced a major decline.
Through YouTube comedy sketches and other digital productions, Dr Likee provided a new platform for established actors and emerging performers to remain active, attract audiences and earn an income.
Many Kumawood personalities who had struggled to find regular work in mainstream film production gained renewed visibility through his online content.
Oboy Siki’s loyalty to the comedian is therefore rooted in what he considers Dr Likee’s contribution to the survival and transformation of Kumawood.
He also recalled that Dr Likee once invited him to join his team for a show in London. Oboy Siki said he declined the invitation because he does not travel outside Ghana, but the gesture demonstrated the strength of their relationship.
McBrown Previously Helped Dr Likee
The connection between McBrown and Dr Likee became more visible after the comedian publicly revealed that she had intervened during a difficult moment surrounding his United Kingdom show.
According to Dr Likee, a sound engineer demanded an additional £2,000 shortly before the program was due to begin. With the organizers unable to raise the money immediately, McBrown reportedly provided critical assistance that enabled the event to proceed.
Dr Likee expressed gratitude for the intervention and said he would not forget the support she offered when his team needed help.
“May God continue to bless Nana Ama McBrown. Her support came at a time when we really needed help,” he said.
Oboy Siki’s association with Dr Likee appears to have influenced his willingness to support McBrown whenever her interests align with those of the comedian and his team.
Actor Says He Does Not Personally Admire McBrown’s Work
Despite that connection, Oboy Siki made it clear that his position should not be interpreted as personal admiration for McBrown.
He said he did not particularly like her work and argued that her widespread popularity did not require everyone in the industry to share the same opinion.
“Not everyone likes her. Some people like her and what she does, while some don’t,” he stated.
The actor explained that he forms his own opinions rather than following popular sentiment, stressing that a difference in preference does not necessarily amount to a personal dispute.
Oboy Siki Uncertain About Attending Movie Premiere
Oboy Siki also indicated that he would not automatically attend McBrown’s movie premiere in Kumasi simply because of his connection to Dr Likee.
He said he would consider participating only if McBrown personally invited him and he felt comfortable attending.
“If she had invited me to the premiere and I felt like I was okay, I would go. I’m a special person, so why would I attend without an invitation?” he asked.
He added that arriving with members of his team without a formal invitation could create an embarrassing situation if they were denied entry.
His comments suggest that his public stance towards McBrown is more complicated than straightforward loyalty or hostility. While he does not identify as an admirer of her work, his respect for Dr Likee and appreciation of the support McBrown offered the comedian have shaped his willingness to stand with her in certain circumstances.
