The Greenville Police Department in South Carolina has closed its investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, confirming that its findings support the coroner’s ruling of an accidental overdose.
Authorities announced the decision today after more than two months of the 36-year-old Heroes and Nashville star died in Greenville. Police said the conclusion followed a review of the medical examiner’s determination and evidence gathered during the investigation.
Panettiere was found unresponsive on August 16 at an apartment in the Judson Mill Lofts complex, where she had been temporarily staying. Emergency personnel attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office determined that her death resulted from the combined toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.
Although the coroner had previously classified the death as accidental, police continued their separate investigation while detectives pursued additional leads.
Investigators had examined whether Panettiere obtained illicit or potentially counterfeit drugs in Southern California before travelling to South Carolina. The Drug Enforcement Administration also joined the inquiry. The closure of the local police investigation does not establish whether any federal investigation has ended, and Greenville police said they could not speak for other agencies.
Panettiere had spoken publicly about her experiences with addiction, postpartum depression and recovery. Known for her leading television roles and appearances in the Scream franchise, she also used interviews and her memoir to discuss the personal challenges she faced beyond her acting career.
