Ghanaian actress and film producer Salma Mumin has revealed that the public criticism surrounding her body enhancement procedure caused her to lose several lucrative endorsement and advertising contracts.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime’s Changes program, the actress explained that the controversy affected her professional relationships with brands and damaged business opportunities that were still under negotiation.
According to Mumin, some companies decided to distance themselves from her because of the intense public debate and negative commentary generated by her cosmetic procedure.
She disclosed that she lost long-standing advertising partnerships, including an endorsement deal with food brand Maggi. Other companies that had expressed interest in working with her also reportedly withdrew before agreements could be finalized.
Mumin said the experience demonstrated how public perception can directly affect the careers and income of celebrities, particularly those who depend on endorsements and brand partnerships.
The actress explained that she initially chose not to respond to criticism because she believed silence was the most appropriate way to handle public scrutiny.
For years, she maintained what she described as a “silence is golden” approach, hoping that the rumours, insults and negative attention would eventually disappear if she refused to engage with them.
However, after enduring public criticism and damaging claims for about eight years, Mumin said she realized that remaining silent had allowed other people to control the narrative surrounding her life.
She consequently decided to speak publicly about her experiences and defend herself whenever she believed false or unfair claims were being made against her.
Mumin maintained that undergoing a body enhancement procedure was a personal decision and should not have resulted in sustained harassment or damage to her professional reputation.
She also argued that individuals should be allowed to make private choices about their bodies without being subjected to public condemnation, provided those decisions do not harm others.
The actress said the backlash affected more than her emotional well-being, as it also had significant financial consequences through the loss of existing and prospective business partnerships.
Her comments have renewed discussion about the pressure placed on female public figures in Ghana, the impact of social media criticism and the extent to which online controversies influence corporate endorsement decisions.
