Shatta Wale Urges Mahama to Protect Free Speech in Fight Against Social Media Abuse

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that efforts to curb social media abuse protect citizens’ right to criticize leaders and participate freely in public debate.

In an open letter published on September 28, 2026, the artiste called for a balanced approach that addresses harmful online conduct while safeguarding political expression, independent journalism and satire.

His appeal follows the President’s concerns about hate speech, ethnic tensions and abusive content on platforms such as TikTok, alongside a proposal for national stakeholder discussions on the issue.

Shatta Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., argued that any resulting framework must clearly distinguish legitimate criticism from misconduct. He maintained that citizens should not face punishment merely for expressing critical views about the President, public officials or other prominent personalities.

The musician also cautioned against measures that could effectively restore criminal libel under a different name, pointing to Ghana’s repeal of the law in 2001.

Rather than sweeping restrictions, he proposed clearly defined rules supported by independent judicial oversight and due process when dealing with proven cases of online abuse.

On account verification, Shatta Wale encouraged social media platforms to strengthen their systems in Ghana. However, he argued that ordinary users should not be compelled to surrender their anonymity as a condition for contributing to public discussions.

Drawing on his own experiences of public ridicule and what he described as defamatory commentary, the artiste said the problem extends beyond social media.

He argued that the conduct now directed at political leaders on TikTok had long been present in the entertainment industry, where musicians have faced insults and unverified allegations from some commentators on radio and television.

His letter called for an approach that protects people from harmful conduct while preserving the freedom to question, challenge and hold influential figures accountable.
