Ghana’s entertainment industry is mourning the passing of veteran Kumawood actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi, who died after a prolonged battle with end-stage kidney disease.
Kumasi-based radio station Akoma FM announced the tragic news on Saturday, July 18, 2026, prompting an outpouring of grief from actors, filmmakers, fans, and colleagues across Ghana’s creative community.
Long Health Struggle Before Death
Obuobi’s health challenges had become public in the weeks before his passing as family members and industry colleagues sought support for his medical treatment.
The respected filmmaker had been diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure and was undergoing regular dialysis sessions to manage the condition.
Doctors were reportedly evaluating his health in preparation for a possible kidney transplant, which was considered the best option for improving his condition.
However, the cost of dialysis, medical care, and the anticipated transplant procedure created a significant financial burden for his family, leading to appeals for assistance from the public and the entertainment industry.

Following reports of Obuobi’s deteriorating health, several prominent figures in Ghana’s Twi-language movie industry stepped forward to support his treatment.
Mercy Asiedu Leads Support Campaign
Veteran actress Mercy Asiedu played a major role in mobilizing support for the actor.
She visited Obuobi and personally contributed GH¢50,000 toward his kidney transplant expenses. She also appealed publicly to fellow actors, filmmakers, and fans to help raise the remaining funds needed for his treatment.
MP Supports Medical Care
The Member of Parliament for Juaben, Francis Owusu-Akyaw, also contributed GH¢20,000 toward Obuobi’s medical expenses.
The donation was presented on his behalf by actress Matilda Asare.
LilWin Makes Contribution
Popular Kumawood comedian and actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, joined the support efforts by donating GH¢10,000 toward the veteran actor’s treatment.
Over GH¢700,000 Needed for Treatment
Medical estimates indicated that more than GH¢700,000 was required to cover the cost of the kidney transplant, continued medical care, post-operation treatment, and long-term medication.
Despite the widespread fundraising campaign and efforts by colleagues to save his life, Obuobi passed away before the transplant procedure could be completed.
