Ghanaian actress Yvonne Okoro has spoken about the different reactions she received from her parents when she decided to pursue a career in acting.
The actress said her mother encouraged her interest in entertainment from an early age, while her father had hoped she would choose a career in medicine or law.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime TV, Okoro recalled that her passion for performing began in childhood, when she wrote plays and staged performances with her siblings for guests visiting their home.
Choosing a different path
Okoro said her father initially wanted her to become a doctor. However, she realised science was not the right fit for her after attending a science class while living in France. She recalled that she often fell asleep during lessons.
She later switched to general arts, prompting her father to hope she would pursue a career in law. Her interest, however, remained in acting and entertainment.
The actress credited her mother with recognising her passion and encouraging her to follow it, even when her father opposed the decision.
Okoro went on to build a career in the film industry, becoming a recognised figure in Ghanaian and West African cinema. She has also spoken about the need to improve standards and strengthen support for local film productions.
