Breast Cancer Awareness Must Deliver Timely Diagnosis and Treatment — Deputy Health Minister

Deputy Minister for Health

Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has called for stronger diagnostic and treatment services to ensure that breast cancer awareness campaigns translate into better care for patients.

Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness Month under the theme, “Early Action, Better Outcomes,” she said public education would achieve limited results if people seeking medical attention encountered barriers to essential services.

She cited estimates of 4,650 new breast cancer cases and approximately 2,060 deaths annually in Ghana, describing the figures as a reminder of the need for early detection and timely treatment.

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah said the government was working to provide mammography and radiotherapy equipment to strengthen screening, diagnosis and treatment. She explained that improving access to appropriate equipment was necessary to address gaps in breast cancer care.

She also highlighted support through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, for women undergoing breast cancer treatment. According to the Deputy Minister, regional patient coordinators are available to help women navigate services, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

The government is also supporting research into the types of breast cancer prevalent in Ghana, she said.

Alongside improvements in healthcare services, Prof. Ayensu-Danquah encouraged people to seek prompt medical assessment when they notice unusual breast changes, including lumps, nipple discharge, skin changes or swelling in the armpit.

She cautioned against misconceptions that delay treatment, stressing that a painless lump should not be ignored and that a biopsy does not cause cancer to spread.

The Deputy Minister urged stakeholders to use the awareness month to connect public education with practical opportunities for early diagnosis and treatment, helping patients receive care without unnecessary delays.
