A newborn boy believed to be a day old is receiving medical care after farmers found him abandoned in bushes at Sombo in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.
The farmers were returning from their fields at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026, when they heard a baby crying. They followed the sound and discovered the infant lying naked in the bush.
Residents and a midwife intervened to help the baby, who was taken to the Sombo Health Centre for urgent attention. Nurses at the facility said he was in stable condition and responding well to treatment, although he remained under medical supervision.
The Assembly Member for the Sombo Electoral Area, Abubakari Seidu, notified the police after arriving at the scene. The Upper West Police Command has begun investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and identify those responsible.
The discovery has shocked residents of the community. Seidu said it was the first such incident recorded in the area during his tenure as assembly member.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the police. Meanwhile, health workers continue to care for the infant at the Sombo Health Centre.
