Four people have died and three others were injured after a gunman opened fire on mourners leaving a memorial service in Katlehong, southeast of Johannesburg.
The attack occurred on Tuesday evening, October 13, 2026. Two men died at the scene, while two other victims later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. At least one child was among those wounded.
The suspect handed himself over to police after the shooting and remains in custody.
According to police, the group was returning from a memorial at Mogobeng Primary School when the shooting occurred on Sophangisa Street in Katlehong North at approximately 6:50 p.m. Members of the African National Congress Youth League were among those caught in the attack.
The service honored Jeanette Magugu, a local ANC figure who had been fatally shot earlier in October. Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the four men who died were aged between 21 and 27.
The murder and attempted murder investigation has been assigned to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team. Police have not disclosed a motive, and investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The ANC Youth League expressed sorrow over the deaths and injuries, which occurred as mourners and community members proceeded from the school towards the deceased leader’s home.
