Ghana and US Virgin Islands Plan Recruitment Deal for Teachers and Nurses

Ghana and the United States Virgin Islands have agreed to develop a recruitment framework that would enable qualified Ghanaian teachers and nurses to work in the Caribbean territory.

The arrangement follows discussions in St. Thomas on Saturday, October 17, 2026, between a Ghanaian delegation representing the Office of the President and the Ministry of Labor and senior US Virgin Islands officials.

A Memorandum of Understanding is expected to be signed in Ghana in November 2026 to formalize the partnership and establish the framework for recruitment.

The initiative is intended to help address shortages in the territory’s healthcare and education sectors while creating overseas employment opportunities for Ghanaian professionals.

For the US Virgin Islands, the proposed arrangement supports efforts by Governor Albert Bryan Jr.’s administration to strengthen staffing in essential public services. Ghana’s participation forms part of the government’s push to expand international career opportunities for its skilled workforce.

The Ghanaian delegation was led by Gilbert Attipoe, a Presidential Aide in the Office of the Chief of Staff. He was joined by Technical Coordinator Kwabena Bediako Acheampong and Samuel Kodom, Executive Aide to the Minister of Labor.

Senior officials from the US Virgin Islands administration participated in the discussions, including Commissioner of Labor Dr. Gary Molloy, who announced plans for the November signing.

The proposed partnership adds to Ghana’s labor cooperation with countries in the Caribbean, where Ghanaian healthcare workers and educators have taken up professional roles.

Details of the initial recruitment numbers, qualification requirements and remuneration have yet to be announced. Further information is expected when the agreement is formally signed next month.
