Ghana Health Service Says Upper West Yellow Fever Outbreak Has Been Curtailed

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says it has curtailed the yellow fever outbreak in the Upper West Region after recording four laboratory-confirmed cases.

The cases were recorded between September and the first half of October 2026 and confirmed by a regional reference laboratory in Dakar, Senegal. They were identified in Sissala West, Wa West, Nadowli-Kaleo and Etu.

When the Ministry of Health declared the outbreak on October 9, three cases had been confirmed. All three patients died. The condition of the fourth patient was not specified in the GHS update.

Vaccination and Response

GHS Director-General Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea said emergency measures helped bring the outbreak under control.

The response included a vaccination campaign led by the GHS with support from UNICEF. Approximately 190,000 vaccine doses were deployed for high-risk border areas and vulnerable communities.

Vaccination coverage reportedly exceeded 92% in some targeted areas, including Siriyiri.

The GHS continues to encourage eligible people who are unsure of their vaccination status to speak with a health worker about receiving the yellow fever vaccine.
