Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has urged Ghanaians to remain calm, saying measures are in place to detect and manage any potential Ebola case.
During an inspection at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the minister highlighted passenger screening, laboratory testing and isolation facilities as key components of Ghana’s preparedness.
The Ministry of Health has said Ghana has not recorded an Ebola case. Authorities have nevertheless intensified surveillance following confirmed infections in Kenya and Nigeria linked to the regional outbreak.
Airport Screening Strengthened
Mr Akandoh said thermal scanners had been installed and electronic health declaration forms reviewed to improve the assessment of arriving passengers.
The forms are intended to help identify potential risks and support contact tracing if a suspected or confirmed case is detected.
He also cited laboratory capacity and the availability of infectious disease facilities for isolating and managing patients.
Separately, the Ghana Health Service said its airport screening procedures include temperature checks and assessments of travelers’ histories. Port health officers have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases.
Emergency Response Arrangements Tested
Preparedness measures include simulation exercises, reviews of laboratory procedures and training to strengthen healthcare workers’ readiness.
The National Ambulance Service and Ghana Health Service have also assessed evacuation routes at the airport’s Terminal 3 to support the safe transfer of suspected patients to designated facilities. The exercise focused on coordination, communication and emergency transport arrangements.
Regional Outbreak Prompts Vigilance
The heightened precautions follow an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with imported cases subsequently reported in Kenya and Nigeria.
In an October 23 update, the World Health Organization urged stronger cross-border surveillance, timely testing and coordinated response measures. It advised against restrictions on travel to or trade with affected countries.
Public Urged to Follow Official Advice
Ghana’s health authorities have encouraged regular hand hygiene and prompt medical attention for people who develop symptoms after travel to an affected area or contact with a suspected or confirmed case.
The ministry has also urged the public to cooperate with health officials, follow official updates and avoid circulating unverified information.
