Government’s Agenda 111 initiative

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ghana’s Minister for Health, has indicated that the government’s ambitious Agenda 111 initiative may face significant challenges in achieving full completion due to financial and logistical constraints.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM, the Minister outlined the difficulties confronting the current administration in advancing the large-scale healthcare infrastructure project initiated under the previous government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Agenda 111 programme was designed to construct 111 hospitals across the country to address gaps in healthcare infrastructure. While the initiative was widely regarded as a transformative effort to improve healthcare delivery, the Minister noted that completing all the facilities within the anticipated timeframe may not be feasible. He explained that although some projects are at advanced stages, a significant number remain at preliminary phases, requiring considerable time, funding, and technical resources.

Furthermore, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh emphasized that the scale of the initiative, combined with the varying levels of project completion inherited by the current administration, presents complex implementation challenges. He noted that while the government remains committed to strengthening the healthcare system, a more pragmatic and phased approach may be necessary given the financial burden and operational demands involved.

The Minister also highlighted that sustained investment and effective resource mobilization will be critical to progressing the projects. Without adequate funding and logistical support, delays are likely to occur, thereby affecting the overall timeline for the completion of the Agenda 111 programme.
