The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has stepped up nationwide monitoring and enforcement exercises, targeting unlicensed health facilities and unqualified practitioners as part of a broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare delivery system and protect public safety.
In an official public brief, the agency said the intensified inspections are designed to ensure strict compliance with national health standards, eliminate substandard medical practices, and safeguard patients from unsafe or illegal healthcare services.
Stronger Enforcement to Protect Public Safety
HeFRA explained that the ongoing regulatory sweep forms part of its core mandate to ensure that all health facilities in Ghana—both public and private—operate within approved legal and professional standards.
According to the agency, the exercise includes routine inspections, compliance checks, and enforcement actions against facilities found to be operating without valid licenses or employing unqualified personnel.
Officials noted that the initiative is expected to significantly improve healthcare quality, restore public confidence in the system, and reduce risks associated with unsafe medical practices.
Alignment with National Health Reform Agenda
The intensified enforcement drive aligns with the Ministry of Health’s broader reform program, popularly referred to as the “Resetting Agenda,” which is being spearheaded by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
The reform initiative focuses on strengthening regulatory oversight, improving service delivery standards, and ensuring that healthcare providers adhere strictly to established guidelines and protocols.
HeFRA indicated that its operations are a key component of these reforms, aimed at building a more accountable and efficient healthcare system nationwide.
Expanding Regional Oversight
As part of efforts to deepen its regulatory reach, HeFRA has expanded its decentralized operations to improve compliance monitoring across all regions.
The agency recently established a regional office in Ho to serve the Volta and Oti Regions, strengthening its ability to supervise health facilities at the local level.
In addition, HeFRA has rolled out intensified inspection exercises in the Upper East Region, targeting facilities suspected of operating without proper certification or violating healthcare standards.
Officials say the regional expansion will ensure faster response times, improved enforcement, and closer collaboration with local health authorities.
Strict Compliance Directives for Health Operators
HeFRA has issued clear directives to all health facility operators as part of the ongoing enforcement campaign.
The agency emphasized that all licensed facilities must visibly display their valid operational licenses at their premises at all times, allowing both inspectors and the public to verify compliance easily.
HeFRA warned that failure to comply with licensing requirements or operating without proper authorization will attract strict regulatory sanctions, including closure of facilities and possible prosecution.
Public Advised to Use Accredited Facilities
The agency has also issued a public advisory urging citizens to take an active role in protecting their health by seeking medical care only from accredited and licensed health facilities.
HeFRA stressed that patronizing unlicensed providers exposes individuals to serious health risks, including misdiagnosis, improper treatment, and unsafe medical procedures.
It encouraged the public to verify the credentials of healthcare providers and report suspicious or unapproved facilities to the appropriate regulatory authorities.
Commitment to Raising Healthcare Standards
HeFRA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s healthcare system meets acceptable international standards through sustained monitoring, enforcement, and public education.
The agency said its long-term goal is to eliminate quack practices, improve patient safety, and ensure that all healthcare providers operate within a transparent and professionally regulated environment.
As enforcement continues across the country, HeFRA has pledged to maintain strict oversight while working with stakeholders to strengthen the overall quality and safety of healthcare delivery in Ghana.
