Ibrahim Mahama Pays US$25,000 Medical Bill for Journalist Afia Kwarteng After Public Appeal

Ibrahim Mahama Pays US$25,000 Medical Bill for Journalist Afia

Ghanaian business leader Ibrahim Mahama has fully settled a US$25,000 medical bill for journalist and public servant Georgina “Afia” Kwarteng, following her emotional public appeal for support to fund urgent cancer treatment.

Kwarteng, aged 40, had appealed for financial assistance after suffering a severe relapse of cancer and requiring an urgent stem cell transplant to improve her chances of recovery.

Journalist Battles Cancer Relapse

According to reports, Kwarteng had previously undergone extensive treatment and successfully overcome cancer after months of medical care.

However, her condition later returned aggressively, leading doctors to recommend advanced treatment that included a stem cell transplant and specialized medical care outside Ghana.

Medical experts advised that the procedure offered her the best opportunity for long-term recovery.

High Medical Costs Created Urgent Need

The estimated cost of her treatment, including international travel, medical procedures, and post-treatment care, was placed at US$25,000, equivalent to approximately GH¢380,000.

The amount was beyond what Kwarteng and her family could independently afford, prompting her to seek assistance from the public.

Her appeal quickly gained attention across social media platforms, with members of the media community and well-wishers rallying support.

Ibrahim Mahama Steps In

Within 24 hours of the public campaign gaining momentum, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Engineers & Planners, intervened and paid the full medical cost.

The businessman’s support covered the entire US$25,000 requirement, allowing Kwarteng to proceed with the urgent treatment plan.

Emotional Reaction From Afia Kwarteng

A video shared widely on social media by media personalities, including Nana Yaa Brefo and Akosua Sarpong, captured an emotional Kwarteng expressing deep appreciation for the gesture.

In the footage, the journalist was seen overwhelmed with emotion as she thanked Mahama and offered prayers for him while visibly moved by the support.

Public Commends Act of Support

The intervention has received widespread praise from members of the public and Ghana’s media fraternity, with many applauding Ibrahim Mahama’s response to the journalist’s urgent health situation.

Supporters highlighted his previous charitable interventions involving medical assistance for individuals facing critical health challenges.

A Lifeline for Recovery

With the medical bill now covered, Afia Kwarteng is expected to continue preparations for the stem cell transplant and related treatment.

The gesture has been described by many as a significant act of compassion that has provided renewed hope during a difficult period in the journalist’s health journey.
