Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja following laboratory testing, Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
The confirmation has triggered a public health response aimed at identifying possible exposures and preventing further transmission.
The patient, a woman who travelled to Nigeria via Uganda, developed symptoms on October 7 and was admitted to a private hospital in Abuja on October 11. Authorities have identified 44 contacts for tracing.
Ugandan health officials said she had been on a business trip to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and only transited through Uganda. Her travel route does not establish where she contracted the infection.
Nigeria has directed public and private health facilities to maintain heightened vigilance. Teams are working to identify and monitor potentially exposed healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel contacts.
The case comes as the Democratic Republic of Congo confronts an outbreak that has recorded more than 9,000 cases and 4,381 deaths, according to figures attributed to Congolese health authorities. Kenya has also reported nine cases.
