15 Arrested Over Alleged Sand Winning Along Accra–Kumasi Expressway

National Security operatives have arrested 15 men over suspected unauthorised sand winning along the Accra–Kumasi Expressway project corridor in the Ashanti Region.

The operation took place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in the Sewua–Donyina–Appiadu enclave. Six vehicles and machines, including a wheel loader, were impounded during the swoop.

The arrests followed a widely circulated video showing the excavation and removal of white sand for commercial purposes, raising concerns about damage to land reserved for the expressway.

National Security Assistant Liaison Officer Ivan Bilson Yeboah said the suspects were being transported to Accra for further investigations. He condemned the damage and said the Regional Security Council was expected to discuss sustained surveillance along the corridor.

Meanwhile, Bosomtwe District Chief Executive Abdullah Hamidu said those involved had claimed to possess authorization from the Ejisu Municipal Assembly but failed to produce a permit when asked.

He said he had ordered the activity to stop and referred the matter to police for investigation.

Security personnel are continuing efforts to locate other suspects who remain at large.
