A 22-year-old law student, Nana Agyeiwaa Baffoe-Bonnie Michaels, has announced her intention to contest the Manhyia South parliamentary seat in Ghana’s 2028 general elections, positioning herself as a youthful alternative to the country’s traditional political establishment.
Popularly known as “Okordie,” Michaels says her campaign will focus on addressing long-standing development challenges in the constituency while advocating for greater opportunities for young people.
Running on the Ticket of The Base Movement Ghana
Unlike many aspiring parliamentary candidates who align with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Michaels will contest on the ticket of The Base Movement Ghana, also known as the Base Ghana First Movement.
She officially announced her parliamentary ambition during a press briefing held at the movement’s regional office in Kumasi on Monday, July 13, 2026.
Addressing supporters and the media, Michaels described herself as a “people-centered, youthful alternative” committed to bringing fresh leadership and practical solutions to the constituency.
Campaign Focused on Youth and Community Development
Explaining her decision to enter politics, Michaels said her ambition is driven by her personal experiences and the everyday struggles faced by residents of Manhyia South.
She argued that young people deserve leaders who understand their realities and are prepared to champion policies that deliver meaningful change.
Her campaign is built around the slogans “Ghana First” and “Jobs for the Youth,” reflecting her commitment to employment creation and national development.
Michaels also criticized long-serving politicians, accusing them of making repeated promises without addressing the constituency’s structural challenges. According to her, Manhyia South has suffered years of neglect despite continued political representation.
Twelve Key Priorities
According to reports by Citi Newsroom and Asaase Radio, Michaels unveiled a manifesto centered on 12 priority areas she believes require urgent attention in Manhyia South.
Her proposed agenda includes:
- Tackling youth unemployment and underemployment.
- Improving access to financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
- Expanding technical and vocational education and skills training.
- Upgrading deteriorating educational infrastructure.
- Addressing resource shortages in local healthcare facilities.
- Rehabilitating roads and improving drainage systems.
- Strengthening sanitation, waste collection, and environmental management.
- Enhancing community security and crime prevention.
- Expanding welfare and empowerment programm for women and girls.
- Developing sports facilities and recreational parks.
- Promoting digital inclusion and technology access for young people.
- Improving engagement and accountability between elected leaders and constituents.
Looking Ahead to 2028
Although Ghana’s next general election is still two years away, Michaels’ early declaration signals the beginning of what could become a closely watched campaign in the Manhyia South constituency.
Her candidacy also reflects a growing trend of younger Ghanaians seeking elected office through emerging political movements, with a focus on youth empowerment, grassroots development, and alternative approaches to governance.
