Bank of Ghana to introduce Heritage Series cedi notes on November 3

The Bank of Ghana will introduce an upgraded series of cedi banknotes on November 3, 2026, with improved security features and designs reflecting the country’s history and culture.

Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama announced the Heritage Series at the end of the central bank’s 132nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Accra on Thursday, September 24. He said the upgrade is intended to make the notes more resistant to counterfeiting and durable enough for prolonged circulation. Bank of Ghana

The series will cover all eight existing banknote denominations: GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200. According to the governor, each design will draw on elements of Ghana’s heritage, identity and history. The Bank of Ghana is expected to provide further details about the notes and their security features ahead of the launch.

Asiama stressed that the introduction of the Heritage Series will not make existing cedi notes invalid. Current banknotes will remain legal tender and circulate alongside the upgraded notes, so the public does not need to rush to exchange or withdraw cash.

The governor also urged people and businesses to handle banknotes carefully. He cautioned against writing on, stapling or crumpling notes, as well as using them for money bouquets or cash spraying, saying such practices damage currency and increase replacement costs.
