The Savannah Regional Police Command has arraigned 43 suspects before the Buipe Magistrate Court in connection with the killing of General Constable Redeemer Owusu during unrest at Gindabour.
The suspects have been charged with murder and abetment of the murder of a public officer following investigations into the violent incident.
Police have also arrested another male suspect who was allegedly found in possession of a locally manufactured pistol and ammunition. He is expected to appear separately before the Damongo Circuit Court on charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The unrest followed an incident on the Gindabour–Kenkyen road on September 16, 2026. A highway patrol team reportedly discovered a motorcyclist unconscious in a nearby bush.
The rider, identified in reports as Seidu Abu, a teacher, was transported for medical attention but died on the way to the hospital.
News of his death reportedly triggered anger within the community, leading to a violent confrontation between a mob and police officers. During the attack, General Constable Redeemer Owusu was killed.
The Ghana Police Service subsequently deployed additional personnel to the community to restore calm, protect lives and property, and support investigations into the circumstances surrounding the two deaths.
Inspector-General of Police Patrick Tetteh Yohunu also travelled to Gindabour with senior officers from the Police Headquarters. The delegation met traditional leaders and other community stakeholders as part of efforts to ease tensions and stabilize the area.
Intelligence officers and reinforcement teams remain in the community to maintain law and order while investigations continue.
The police are expected to examine the circumstances that led to Seidu Abu being found unconscious, the events that sparked the mob action and the individual roles allegedly played by those arrested.
The charges against the suspects remain allegations and must be proven in court.
