Ghanaian winger Aaron Opoku provided an assist and completed the full match as Eintracht Braunschweig suffered a dramatic 5–3 defeat to Hertha BSC in the German 2. Bundesliga.
The Matchday Three encounter at the Eintracht-Stadion on Friday, August 28, 2026, produced eight goals and an extraordinary turnaround after the hosts surrendered an early two-goal advantage.
Braunschweig Race Into Two-Goal Lead
Eintracht Braunschweig made an impressive start and opened the scoring through Yann Sturm in the 10th minute.
Sturm dispossessed Hertha defender Niklas Kolbe before advancing towards goal and calmly beating goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Opoku then played a decisive role in Braunschweig’s second goal in the 33rd minute. The 27-year-old delivered an accurate corner into the penalty area, allowing Kevin Ehlers to rise above the defense and score with a powerful header.
The Ghanaian nearly added a goal of his own eight minutes later but curled his effort wide despite being in a promising position.
Hertha Recover Before Half-Time
Braunschweig appeared to be in control at 2–0, but Hertha launched a remarkable response during the closing stages of the first half.
Jón Dagur Þorsteinsson reduced the deficit in the 44th minute with a powerful finish before Josip Brekalo equalised in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Brekalo scored from approximately 40 metres after Braunschweig lost possession from their own corner. With goalkeeper Thorben Hoffmann caught away from his line, the Croatian sent the ball into the unguarded net to make it 2–2 at the interval.
Ehlers Own Goal Completes Turnaround
Hertha returned from the break with greater intensity and moved ahead in the 53rd minute.
Þorsteinsson delivered a low cross into the penalty area, where Ehlers accidentally diverted the ball past his own goalkeeper while attempting to clear.
Opoku created another opportunity for the hosts in the 60th minute by finding Lino Tempelmann with a square pass. Tempelmann’s first attempt was saved before he failed to convert the rebound.
Hertha extended their lead in the 69th minute after a video review resulted in a penalty for an infringement involving Tempelmann and Kolbe. Brekalo converted the spot kick to claim his second goal and make the score 4–2.
Late Goals Complete Eight-Goal Contest
Oluwaseun Adewumi added Hertha’s fifth goal in the 87th minute, meeting Luca Schuler’s cross with a volley at the far post.
Braunschweig responded almost immediately. Opoku forced Gersbeck into a save with a low shot, but the Hertha goalkeeper failed to hold the ball, allowing substitute Jan Urbich to score from the rebound in the 88th minute.
Urbich’s goal reduced the deficit to 5–3 but arrived too late to inspire a comeback.
The result allowed Hertha BSC to maintain their perfect start to the league campaign after recovering impressively from two goals down.
Opoku Delivers Productive Performance
Despite Braunschweig’s defeat, Opoku remained one of the home side’s most influential attacking players.
He completed the entire 90 minutes, provided the corner from which Ehlers scored and remained involved in Braunschweig’s most dangerous moments. His late shot also led directly to Urbich’s consolation goal, although he was not officially credited with another assist.

The winger’s display offered an individual positive for Eintracht Braunschweig, but the club will be disappointed after allowing a commanding 2–0 lead to become a heavy home defeat.
