Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify investigations into the deadly violence at New Winneba and prosecute everyone found responsible.
His demand follows clashes on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, that left three people dead and at least 15 others injured.
Reports indicate that the injured included a police officer who was deployed to respond to the disturbance.
The attackers were alleged to have come from the adjoining communities of Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze before entering New Winneba.
Afenyo-Markin expressed concern about how the group reportedly mobilized with guns, machetes and clubs and moved into the community in broad daylight without being intercepted by security personnel.
The Effutu MP said the incident raised serious questions about security intelligence and the preparedness of law-enforcement agencies, particularly because a police station is located within the area.
“This was not done in the night. It’s broad daylight, morning, walking, and chanting one song to another community,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin questioned whether the appropriate agencies received any early warnings about the mobilization and what actions were taken before the violence erupted.
He directly appealed to the divisional police commander to remain firm and ensure that peace is restored to New Winneba and the surrounding communities.
“My word to the Police, and I speak directly to the divisional commander. ACP, divisional commander, please. I have always told you to be firm. Please be firm and keep the peace,” he stated.
The Minority Leader urged the Central Regional Police Command to collaborate with the Police Headquarters and conduct sustained operations in the affected communities.
According to him, intensive searches and intelligence gathering could help investigators identify the organizers and participants within a short period.
“If indeed the Regional Command, assisted by the headquarters of Ghana Police, join forces and they get into the community day and night, within a week, I am very positive that they will get to know all those behind,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin also demanded an investigation into the source of the firearms and other weapons allegedly used during the attack.
He said identifying how the weapons were acquired and transported into the community should form an important part of the investigation.
The MP warned that delays in arresting and prosecuting those responsible could increase tension and create conditions for retaliatory violence.
He consequently appealed to residents of New Winneba and neighboring communities to remain calm and allow the security agencies to address the matter.
“Nobody should take the law into his own hands or hers and plan any revenge,” he cautioned.
Afenyo-Markin maintained that the immediate priority must be to identify the perpetrators, prosecute them according to law and restore lasting peace in the affected communities.
