Majority Leader and proud old student of St. Augustine’s College, Osahen Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has pledged a GH¢50,000 cash reward to the school’s National Science and Maths Quiz team if they emerge winners of the 2026 grand finale.
A member of the Augustine’s Past Students Union, Class of 1997 (APSU ’97), Afenyo-Markin’s gesture is being seen as a show of confidence in the team and a demonstration of the strong bond between old students and their alma mater.
St. Augustine’s College secured its place in the grand finale after an impressive semi-final performance against Prempeh College and Pope John Senior High School, earning the admiration of supporters who now believe the Cape Coast-based school has a strong chance of reclaiming the coveted NSMQ title.
The pledge also adds to growing support from the school’s alumni community. The Augustine’s Past Students Union has already rallied behind the contestants with a motivational package, while Afenyo-Markin’s intervention has further boosted the excitement and morale surrounding the school’s title campaign.
The development highlights how the NSMQ continues to bring together Ghanaians across political, professional and social lines, with alumni communities rallying behind young students whose performance represents the academic strength and legacy of their schools.
All attention is now on the University of Ghana, where the 2026 NSMQ grand finale takes place today, September 10. St. Augustine’s College will be seeking its third NSMQ championship, hoping to add another historic chapter to the school’s rich legacy in the competition.
