Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Paul Awentami Afoko, has urged the party to focus on rebuilding its structures and restoring unity rather than blaming individuals for its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Mr. Afoko, who has announced his intention to contest the NPP National Chairmanship position, made the call during a press conference held at the Kempinski Hotel on Tuesday. He said the party’s electoral setback was caused by a combination of factors, including organisational challenges, communication failures, economic concerns, weakened grassroots engagement, internal divisions and declining public confidence.
According to him, the success of any presidential candidate depends on a strong and united party structure. He stressed the need for disciplined party organisation, motivated grassroots supporters and a clear constituency-level strategy to help the NPP regain power.
“The duty before us now is not to blame. The duty before us is to rebuild,” Mr. Afoko said, adding that the party must welcome back members who feel neglected, excluded or discouraged. He called on party supporters to compete constructively and preserve the tradition of tolerance and internal democracy associated with the Danquah-Busia tradition.
Outlining his vision under the theme “3Rs” — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power, Mr. Afoko said his leadership would prioritise strengthening polling stations, electoral areas and constituency structures. He noted that the party must identify areas where it lost support, understand the reasons behind those losses and develop strategies to win back voters.
Mr. Afoko also referenced his previous tenure as NPP National Chairman, highlighting initiatives such as strengthening constituency administration and organising parliamentary primaries. He expressed confidence that similar reforms could be implemented to improve the party’s organisation and electoral preparedness.
He concluded that Ghana requires a strong and responsible opposition party capable of offering credible alternatives to citizens. According to him, the NPP’s return to power will depend on humility, hard work, unity, effective organisation and a renewed commitment to national development rather than a sense of entitlement.
