Akuapem Marks 200-Year Victory Anniversary with Odwira Celebrations

Indigenous Akuapem people of eastern Ghana

The Akuapem people have marked the 200th anniversary of their role in the victory over the Ashanti Empire with an Odwira Festival celebration combining historical remembrance, traditional rites and cultural displays.

The two-week observance began on September 21, 2026, and commemorated the conflict fought on August 7, 1826. Chiefs appeared in decorated palanquins as residents celebrated with kente, drumming, dancing and praise singing.

A central feature was a ceremonial battle re-enactment. Young men dressed as warriors moved from the palace into the hills and forest, where traditional leaders poured libations and performed rituals.

Participants portraying captured soldiers were symbolically bound and escorted back to the community before being presented to the chief.

Nanahemaa Adwoa Awindor, the queen mother responsible for development activities, said the anniversary reflected the resilience of the people and the ability of culture to connect successive generations.

The celebrations also encouraged younger residents to learn about their heritage and participate in preserving it.

Alongside its historical significance, Odwira remains a period of communal purification, thanksgiving and spiritual renewal, bringing families and traditional authorities together to reaffirm their shared identity.
