The Alagumgube Association has donated 260 Gurenɛ language books to the Upper East Regional Education Directorate to strengthen the teaching and learning of the indigenous language in basic schools.
The books were officially presented to the Directorate at the Regional Education Office in Bolgatanga on Friday, September 18, 2026.
Under the distribution arrangement, 250 copies will be shared among five Municipal and District Education Directorates in Gurenɛ-speaking areas. The remaining 10 copies will be retained by the Regional Directorate.
Speaking on behalf of the association during the presentation, Abraham Adoctor Giba described the donation as an important first step towards promoting the use of Gurenɛ in schools.
He explained that the initiative was intended to serve as a seed that would contribute to preserving the identity, culture and heritage of the people through education. He also expressed hope that the books would improve access to learning materials for pupils and teachers.
The association acknowledged the efforts of language specialists, educators and curriculum developers who have contributed to the recognition and development of Gurenɛ as an approved language for teaching and examinations.
Among those recognised were Prof. Avea Nsoh, Prof. Atintono Samuel, Mr. James Ababila, Dr. Helen Atipoka and Mr. Nathaniel N-yaaba.
The association also commended the author of the books, Mr. Akariboga Isaac, for his contribution to the development of educational resources in the indigenous language.
The donation is expected to support classroom instruction, improve literacy among learners and encourage younger generations to develop a stronger appreciation for their linguistic and cultural heritage.
