Ghanaian defender Alexandra Tay is drawing on her previous tournament experience as the Black Princesses prepare to begin their campaign at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
The Stanford Cardinal center-back is one of only three players in head coach Charles Sampson’s 21-member squad who participated in the 2024 tournament in Colombia. She returns alongside forward Jennifer Dawah and goalkeeper Najat Abdul Salam.
Their experience is expected to provide leadership and composure as Ghana attempts to make a significant impact at the global competition.
Tay, who will wear the No. 14 jersey, is expected to anchor the Black Princesses’ defense. She could feature alongside Diana Amoako of Ampem Darkoa Ladies, Police Ladies defender Margaret Agyapomaa and Precious Asante of Dreamz Ladies.
Having already competed at this level, the defender understands the physical intensity and tactical discipline required in international youth football. Her composure under pressure and ability to organize the backline could prove important against Ghana’s Group C opponents.
The Black Princesses have qualified for every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup since 2010, with the Poland tournament marking their eighth consecutive appearance.
Despite their consistency in qualifying, Ghana have never advanced beyond the group stage. The team will therefore be aiming to overcome its history of slow starts and reach the knockout phase for the first time.
Ghana will open its campaign against tournament debutants Ecuador at Arena Sosnowiec on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
The Black Princesses will return to the same venue on Wednesday, September 9, for their second group match against South Korea. They will conclude the group stage against European powerhouse France on Saturday, September 12.
Tay’s tournament experience, defensive awareness and leadership will be crucial as Ghana pursues a historic place in the knockout stage.
