The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has urged banks to play a greater role in maintaining and beautifying public spaces across the country.
Speaking at a meeting with heads of banks, Mr Ayariga said financial institutions have the resources and reach to support efforts to create cleaner, greener and more attractive communities.
He proposed that selected streets could be named to reflect partnerships between banks and communities, with the institutions encouraged to adopt and maintain those streets.
According to the Minister, the initiative would strengthen collaboration between government, the private sector and citizens while helping to improve the appearance of public spaces.
“I believe that banks have the resources, the reach, and the responsibility to help keep our public spaces clean, green, and welcoming,” he said.
Mr Ayariga stressed that the initiative would be based on partnership rather than compulsion. He said the Ministry would work with the banking sector to develop a transparent and sustainable framework for the programme.
He added that the broader goal is to promote a culture where institutions and citizens recognise their shared responsibility for maintaining public spaces and contributing to national development.
