The Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly has presented business equipment and financial grants to 51 Persons with Disabilities in the municipality.
Held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the initiative marked the Assembly’s 10th disbursement under the government’s Disability Fund.
The support is intended to promote economic independence, improve the livelihoods of beneficiaries and reduce reliance on street begging.
Beneficiaries Receive Business Equipment
The Assembly distributed entrepreneurial tools selected to help beneficiaries establish or expand income-generating activities.
The items included 40 Innova chest freezers, industrial sewing machines, popcorn-making machines, industrial washing machines and water storage tanks. Wheelchairs were also presented to beneficiaries with mobility needs.
Municipal officials said the equipment was distributed based on the identified needs and proposed business activities of the recipients.
Cash Grants Support Businesses, Health and Education
Some beneficiaries received direct financial assistance to provide working capital for their businesses.
Other cash grants were allocated to cover essential medical expenses and educational needs. The various forms of assistance were designed to respond to the different economic and personal circumstances of beneficiaries.
The Assembly said the initiative forms part of its commitment to ensuring that Persons with Disabilities have access to sustainable livelihood opportunities and essential services.
Disability Fund Allocation Increased
Speaking at the presentation in Accra, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, commended the government for increasing the Disability Fund allocation from 3% to 5% of the District Assemblies Common Fund.
He said the increased allocation would enable municipal and district assemblies to extend support to more Persons with Disabilities and provide resources better suited to their needs.
More Than 200 PWDs Registered in Ayawaso East
The 51 recipients form part of more than 200 registered Persons with Disabilities across the municipality.
The register includes people with physical, visual, hearing, speech and intellectual disabilities. Municipal authorities acknowledged that many registered individuals are still awaiting assistance.
Under the leadership of Municipal Chief Executive Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim and MP Baba Jamal, the Assembly has pledged to expand the program and ensure that the remaining qualified beneficiaries receive support.
New Assessment Underway
The Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly and its Social Welfare Department have begun another needs assessment to identify the most appropriate assistance for beneficiaries who have not yet been covered.
The assessment will examine their medical, educational, mobility and business needs before the next distribution.
Officials expect the remaining applications to be processed during the next disbursement window scheduled for October or November 2026.
