A station loading boy at Ayi Mensah in the Greater Accra Region, Jonathan Quaicoe, has received widespread commendation after returning a passenger’s missing bag containing €3,000, nearly GH¢40,000, and GH¢1,000 in cash.
The incident began when a female passenger boarded a commercial Toyota Hiace vehicle at Ghana Flag in Accra for a journey to Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
After arriving at her destination, the passenger realised that her bag was missing. Apart from the foreign and local currencies, the bag reportedly contained other personal belongings.
Unable to locate it, the woman reported the matter to the Koforidua Central Police Station. The New Juaben South Police Command subsequently began an investigation to trace the vehicle and recover the missing property.
An investigation team travelled towards Accra as part of efforts to establish where the bag might have been left. Enquiries eventually led the officers to the Ayi Mensah transport station.
At the station, the investigators found that Quaicoe had taken possession of the lost bag for safekeeping. He promptly handed it over to the police with the cash and other contents intact.
The bag was subsequently returned to its owner, who expressed relief and appreciation after confirming that none of her belongings had been removed.
In recognition of his honesty, the woman gave Quaicoe a monetary reward. The police also honoured him for demonstrating integrity and assisting in the successful recovery of the missing property.
The New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer, DSP Augustine Asante Kusi, publicly commended the loading boy and presented him with a brand-new mobile phone on behalf of the Ghana Police Service.
DSP Asante Kusi described Quaicoe’s conduct as an example of honesty and patriotism worthy of emulation.
He encouraged commercial drivers, loading boys, transport station workers and members of the public to surrender misplaced items to the police or relevant authorities so that they can be returned to their rightful owners.
The officer also urged passengers to remain vigilant and carefully check their belongings before leaving commercial vehicles or transport terminals.
Quaicoe’s action has attracted public admiration, with many praising him for choosing to return the significant amount of money instead of keeping it.
His conduct highlights the importance of honesty within public transport stations, where passengers frequently leave behind bags, mobile phones and other valuables.
