Bank of Ghana Honored by GJA for Promoting Transparency and Media Engagement

Bank of Ghana award

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has been recognized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for its commitment to transparency, accountability, and constructive engagement with the media, receiving a prestigious honor at the Second World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) Honors Night held in Accra on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

The award highlights the central bank’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public communication and support national development through open information sharing and collaboration with the media.

According to the GJA, the recognition was conferred on the Bank of Ghana in acknowledgment of its sustained contribution to national development and its dedication to fostering transparent communication with journalists and the general public.

The association noted that access to timely, accurate, and reliable information remains essential for informed public discourse, particularly on economic and financial issues that directly affect citizens, businesses, and policymakers.

By maintaining regular engagement with the media and providing updates on monetary policy, financial sector developments, and economic performance, the Bank has played a significant role in helping the public better understand Ghana’s economic landscape.

The award was received on behalf of the Bank by Mr. Bernard Otabil, Director of Communications, and Mrs. Emelia Awuviri, Director of the External Facilities and Project Administration Department.

The two officials represented the institution during the ceremony, which brought together journalists, media executives, policymakers, business leaders, and representatives from various public and private organizations.

Their participation underscored the Bank’s commitment to maintaining strong working relationships with media organizations and supporting efforts aimed at improving public understanding of economic and financial matters.

The World Press Freedom Day Honors Night has become an important annual event organized by the Ghana Journalists Association to celebrate individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to media excellence, press freedom, good governance, and national development.

The event serves as a platform to recognize organizations whose work supports the values of transparency, accountability, and democratic participation.

Over the years, World Press Freedom Day celebrations have highlighted the critical role of journalists and media institutions in safeguarding freedom of expression, promoting access to information, and holding public institutions accountable.

This year’s ceremony continued that tradition by honoring organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to openness and collaboration with the media.

For central banks, effective communication has become an increasingly important tool in building public confidence and ensuring that policy decisions are clearly understood by citizens and market participants.

The Bank of Ghana has in recent years expanded its public engagement initiatives through press briefings, policy announcements, stakeholder consultations, and digital communication platforms aimed at making financial information more accessible.

Such efforts help improve transparency around monetary policy decisions, inflation management strategies, banking sector reforms, and broader economic developments.

Industry observers note that transparent communication from financial institutions contributes to market stability and enhances public trust in economic governance.

A key theme of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day Honors Night was the importance of collaboration between public institutions and the media in advancing national development goals.

Participants emphasized that strong partnerships between journalists and public institutions can help promote informed debate, strengthen accountability mechanisms, and ensure that citizens have access to credible information.

The recognition of the Bank of Ghana reflects the growing importance of institutional transparency in modern governance and highlights the role that effective communication plays in supporting democratic values and economic development.

As Ghana continues to pursue economic growth and financial sector reforms, collaboration between institutions such as the Bank of Ghana and the media is expected to remain a critical component of public engagement and national progress.

The honor from the Ghana Journalists Association therefore not only recognizes the Bank’s achievements to date but also reinforces the importance of maintaining open channels of communication in the service of the public interest.
