The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced two men to a combined total of 50 years in prison for their involvement in an armed robbery attack on a fuel station in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
The sentences were handed down on Monday, June 15, 2026, by His Honour Isaac Appiatu after the two accused persons were found guilty on two counts of robbery.
Convicts and Sentencing Details
The court heard that both men played key roles in the violent robbery operation and imposed separate sentences for each count, to run concurrently.
- Kwadwo Baffour (38): A professional driver, Baffour was sentenced to 20 years on each count, with the terms to run concurrently.
- Kwame Affisah (36): Also known as Abedinago, Affisah received a 30-year sentence on each count, also to run concurrently.
Affisah is already serving a separate seven-year prison sentence at Kumasi Central Prison for an unrelated offence. Both convicts will continue their sentences at the same facility.
Details of the Armed Robbery
According to police prosecutors, the incident occurred in the early hours of August 17, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., when the victims were on duty at a fuel station in New Edubiase.
The attackers reportedly targeted the Brent Energy Filling Station, where they stormed the premises armed with pump-action shotguns. The weapons were used to threaten and intimidate attendants during the raid.
After subduing staff at the station, the robbers allegedly made away with GH₵2,500 in cash as well as electronic devices and personal belongings valued at about GH₵200,000.
Court’s Legal Basis for Sentencing
The prosecution successfully established the charges under Section 149 of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which prescribes strict penalties for robbery involving the use of firearms and other lethal weapons.
The court’s ruling brings closure to a case that had been under investigation for nearly two years and highlights ongoing judicial efforts to clamp down on violent crimes in the Ashanti Region.
