The Black Star Experience Secretariat has launched a nationwide choral music competition to identify, nurture and showcase talented choirs while celebrating Ghana’s musical heritage.
Announced following regional stakeholder engagements in Cape Coast and Takoradi, the Black Star Choral Music Contest will welcome groups from schools, churches, tertiary institutions, communities and other organised bodies.
The competition will begin with regional contests, with winning choirs advancing to represent their regions at the national finals in Accra.
Black Star Experience Coordinator Rex Omar highlighted the strong presence of choral music in Ghanaian communities, particularly within churches. He said those grassroots connections provided an opportunity to bring the wider initiative closer to citizens and encourage participation.
The contest falls under the Music Pillar of the Black Star Experience, an initiative of the Office of the President. Beyond recognizing outstanding performers, it aims to support the creative sector, preserve musical traditions and strengthen national unity through shared cultural expression.
The regional consultations brought together traditional authorities, government representatives, faith-based leaders and members of the creative industry to discuss the initiative.
Among those involved was Clarence Kenneth Ekow Pieterson, a regional chairman of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).
Organizers intend the contest to provide a platform for choral groups from different backgrounds to gain national exposure while contributing to cultural pride and the development of Ghanaian music.
