Black Stars Explain Four-Goalkeeper Strategy as Ghana Intensifies World Cup Preparations

4 goalkeepers

Ghana’s goalkeeping coach has shed light on the decision to keep four goalkeepers in the Black Stars’ FIFA World Cup training camp, explaining that the move is aimed at maximizing the quality and intensity of training sessions rather than expanding matchday selection options.

Although Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Benjamin Asare, and Joseph Anang make up Ghana’s official 26-man World Cup squad, Solomon Agbasi has remained with the team throughout the tournament to play an important supporting role during preparations.

Speaking to GhanaFA.org, the goalkeeping coach revealed that head coach Carlos Queiroz’s demanding training methods require multiple goalkeepers to ensure sessions run smoothly and efficiently.

“We have four, and sometimes there’s speculation about why four goalkeepers,” he explained. “The reason is coach Carlos Queiroz likes to do a lot of finishing and crossing drills, and it’s important we have four so they can rotate. There’s less repetition for each one of them, and that keeps them healthy and sharp.”

The coach emphasized that the additional goalkeeper has been instrumental in maintaining a high tempo during training while reducing fatigue and minimizing the risk of injury. Frequent rotation allows each goalkeeper to remain physically fresh and mentally focused throughout intensive practice sessions.

Beyond the tactical benefits, he praised the positive atmosphere that has developed within the goalkeeping unit, noting that healthy competition has been balanced by exceptional teamwork and mutual support.

“We’ve created a competitive yet positive environment. We brought a certain energy and spirit to training. The cooperation has been unbelievable,” he said.

He also commended the professionalism and dedication displayed by Ati-Zigi, Asare, Anang, and Agbasi, describing the quartet as humble, hardworking, and fully committed to helping Ghana achieve success on the world stage.

While FIFA regulations permit only three goalkeepers in the official tournament squad, the presence of a fourth shot-stopper in camp has provided valuable depth during training, enabling the coaching staff to conduct specialized drills without compromising intensity or player welfare.

The Black Stars now turn their attention to their second Group stage fixture against England, with confidence high after opening their campaign with a victory over Panama. Another positive result would significantly strengthen Ghana’s chances of advancing to the knockout rounds and continuing an encouraging World Cup run.
