Burkina Faso has officially inaugurated eight major road infrastructure projects in the capital, Ouagadougou, marking a significant investment aimed at improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and strengthening access to key security installations.
The projects, valued at approximately $70.4 million, were unveiled by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo during a ceremony celebrating the completion of the new transport infrastructure. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to address rapid urban growth and modernize critical public infrastructure across the capital.
The newly completed network includes 22 kilometers of modern asphalt roads designed to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and improve connectivity between major districts. A central feature of the development is the Northern Ring Road, a 10.23-kilometer corridor that links one of Ouagadougou’s principal interchanges to northern transport routes, easing movement across the city and supporting regional trade.
In addition to road construction, the project includes nearly 20 kilometers of drainage infrastructure. The underground drainage systems have been designed to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season, a recurring challenge that often disrupts transportation and damages infrastructure in the capital.
While the new roads are expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, officials noted that the investment also carries strategic security importance. Several of the newly developed routes provide improved access to major defense and law enforcement facilities, helping ensure faster and more reliable transportation for security operations.
The infrastructure upgrades serve key national institutions, including the Ministry of Defence and Patriotic Affairs, the General Bila Zagré military camp, several security facilities located within the Ouaga 2000 district, and the capital’s high-security prison.
Government officials say the enhanced road network will support both civilian and security-related mobility while strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to emergencies and maintain essential services.
Funding for the projects was secured through partnerships with regional financial institutions, including the West African Development Bank (BOAD) and Vista Bank. The collaboration reflects growing efforts to mobilize development financing for critical infrastructure projects across Burkina Faso.
Construction Minister Mikaïlou Sidibé described the road developments as an important component of the nation’s resilience strategy, emphasizing that efficient transportation networks are essential for economic growth, trade, and national security.
Authorities believe the improved road system will help facilitate the movement of goods and people throughout the capital, reduce travel times, and support long-term urban development as Ouagadougou continues to expand.
The completion of the projects represents one of the most significant recent investments in the city’s transport infrastructure and highlights the government’s commitment to modernizing public services while addressing the challenges of a rapidly growing urban population.
