Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso’s military leader, has issued a stern warning to anyone within his administration who may be challenging his authority, declaring that he intends to remain the country’s sole leader amid growing speculation of divisions within the ruling junta.
Speaking to community leaders in the northern town of Ouahigouya, Traoré dismissed reports of an internal power struggle, using a nautical metaphor to reinforce his position.
“There can’t be two captains on one ship,” he said.
He also delivered a blunt warning to members of his administration, stating:
“If anyone screws up, I’ll take you down without a second thought. There are no strongmen around me.”
The remarks come as speculation intensifies over the fate of several senior military officials who have disappeared from public view in recent months.
Disappearances Fuel Power Struggle Rumors
Questions surrounding the stability of Burkina Faso’s ruling military government have grown following the prolonged absence of two of the junta’s most influential figures.
Oumarou Yabre
Oumarou Yabre, widely regarded as the junta’s second-in-command, serves as head of the National Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council. He has not appeared publicly since late May, prompting widespread speculation.
According to security sources, Yabre has stopped reporting to his office, while the security presence at his residence has reportedly been significantly reduced. Reports also indicate that two of his close associates were removed from their government and state-owned company positions through presidential decrees.
Farouk Azaria Sorgho
Another key figure whose absence has raised concerns is Farouk Azaria Sorgho, the junta’s spokesperson and commander of the Rapid Intervention Battalion No. 4.
Sorgho has reportedly not been seen publicly since mid-May. Some security officials have alleged that he may have been detained by forces loyal to Traoré, although no official confirmation has been provided.
His deputy has since assumed command of the military battalion, while reports also claim that Sorgho’s father, a former infrastructure minister, was taken away by armed men.
Security Tightened Around Presidential Palace
Amid growing rumors of internal divisions, security measures have been significantly reinforced in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou.
Over the past two months, authorities have established heavily fortified security checkpoints around the presidential palace. Local officials have also permanently redirected traffic away from the area as part of broader efforts to strengthen security against any potential coup attempt or attack targeting the presidency.
The increased military presence has further fueled public speculation about tensions within the country’s leadership.
Traoré’s Rule
Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power in September 2022 after leading a military coup that removed the previous transitional government. He justified the takeover by pledging to restore security and combat the jihadist insurgency that continues to affect large parts of Burkina Faso.
Despite ongoing military operations, the country continues to face persistent security challenges, while reports of possible internal disagreements within the ruling junta have attracted increasing attention.
Traoré’s latest comments appear aimed at reinforcing his authority and sending a clear message that he remains firmly in control of Burkina Faso’s military-led government.
