Cabinet Approves Ghana’s Bid to Join BRICS

Ghana is preparing to formally apply for membership of the BRICS economic bloc after President John Dramani Mahama’s Cabinet approved the move, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

The decision forms part of the government’s efforts to broaden Ghana’s international partnerships, explore additional economic opportunities and deepen cooperation with countries across the Global South.

Ablakwa made the announcement during an official visit to Accra by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. He said Ghana had requested India’s assistance and support in pursuing the application.

The minister highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries, pointing to their shared history within the Non-Aligned Movement as a foundation for continued cooperation.

The proposed membership aligns with the Mahama administration’s “New Economy” and “Accra Reset” agendas, which seek to move Ghana beyond economic stabilization towards industrial development and broader economic transformation.

BRICS brings together major emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Its expanded membership includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025, providing another avenue for West African engagement with the grouping.

Cabinet’s approval clears the way for Ghana to pursue its application, but does not confer membership. Admission will depend on the agreement of existing BRICS member states.
