Chelsea have reportedly rejected several approaches for young defender Josh Acheampong amid growing interest from Premier League rivals, including Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City.
The 20-year-old Cobham academy graduate has attracted attention because of his ability to operate as both a central defender and a right-back. Crystal Palace are understood to have explored the possibility of signing him on loan, but Chelsea have shown no willingness to enter negotiations.
The Stamford Bridge hierarchy reportedly considers Acheampong an important part of the club’s long-term plans. He has been included on an eight-player “untouchable” list alongside key first-team figures such as Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo.
Acheampong is under contract with Chelsea until June 2029, leaving the club in a strong position regarding his immediate future.
New head coach Xabi Alonso has also demonstrated confidence in the England Under-21 international. Acheampong started Alonso’s first match in charge and has reportedly been granted protected status within the senior squad.
Crystal Palace’s interest comes as new manager Pierre Sage seeks to strengthen his defensive options following Maxence Lacroix’s move to Chelsea. The Eagles identified Acheampong as a potential addition but have received no encouragement from Stamford Bridge over a temporary deal.
Liverpool are also reportedly monitoring the defender. His versatility is considered particularly attractive to the Reds as they assess their defensive depth amid concerns about Joe Gomez’s fitness.
Arsenal, Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Manchester City have either made inquiries or continue to follow Acheampong’s development closely. His age, Premier League experience and ability to cover multiple positions have made him one of Chelsea’s most sought-after academy products.
Despite Chelsea’s refusal to consider offers, questions remain about the defender’s pathway to regular first-team football.
Acheampong made 17 Premier League appearances last season, including eight starts and nine outings from the bench. While those appearances provided valuable senior experience, people close to the player are reportedly seeking clearer assurances about his opportunities under the new coaching staff.
There is also said to be concern within his camp about Chelsea’s continued investment in external defensive signings. The arrival of players on significantly higher wages could create further competition and make it more difficult for the academy graduate to secure a regular starting position.
Chelsea must now balance their determination to retain Acheampong with the need to provide sufficient playing time for his development. A lack of consistent opportunities could encourage interested clubs to renew their approaches before the transfer window closes.
For now, however, Chelsea’s position remains firm: Acheampong is not available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move. The club believes his versatility and potential make him a central part of its long-term project at Stamford Bridge.
