Chelsea produced a remarkable second-half comeback at Stamford Bridge, recovering from two goals down to defeat Leeds United 6–3 in a thrilling Carabao Cup third-round encounter.
Leeds made an impressive start and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Tarik Muharemović. The defender rose to meet Harry Wilson’s corner and directed a powerful header beyond the Chelsea goalkeeper.
Chelsea struggled to find a response before the interval, prompting manager Xabi Alonso to make four substitutions at half-time. Cole Palmer, Reece James, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto were introduced as the hosts attempted to change the direction of the match.
Despite the changes, Leeds doubled their advantage three minutes after the restart. Brenden Aaronson found space in the Chelsea penalty area and calmly converted in the 48th minute to give the visitors a 2–0 lead.
The second goal sparked an immediate reaction from Chelsea, with Palmer leading the recovery. He reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute before scoring again two minutes later.
Palmer’s second goal came from a left-footed strike following an assist from Danny Welbeck, bringing Chelsea level at 2–2 and shifting the momentum firmly in the home side’s favour.
Chelsea completed the turnaround in the 60th minute when Neto finished a quick attacking move involving Palmer and Rogers. The goal put the Blues ahead for the first time after they had trailed by two goals only minutes earlier.
Welbeck extended Chelsea’s lead in the 65th minute, converting Rogers’ cross to make it 4–2. It was his first goal of the night and appeared to put Alonso’s team in control of the contest.
Leeds refused to surrender and revived their hopes in the 75th minute through Dominic Calvert-Lewin. His goal reduced the deficit to 4–3 and set up a tense conclusion at Stamford Bridge.
However, Chelsea restored their two-goal advantage five minutes later when Valentín Barco found the net to make it 5–3.
Welbeck then completed the scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time, netting his second goal of the match to seal a dramatic 6–3 victory for Chelsea.
The result secured Chelsea’s place in the next round of the Carabao Cup following a memorable nine-goal contest. Palmer and Welbeck finished with two goals each, while Neto and Barco were also on target during an outstanding second-half attacking display.
For Leeds, the defeat brought a disappointing end to a match in which they had established a commanding advantage. Muharemović, Aaronson and Calvert-Lewin scored for the visitors, but Chelsea’s six-goal response after the break ultimately proved decisive.
