China Grants Zero-Tariff Access to 53 African Nations, Excluding Eswatini

China Africa tariffs

China has officially rolled out a sweeping zero-tariff policy for African exports, extending duty-free access to 53 out of the continent’s 54 countries as of May 1, 2026. The only nation excluded from the arrangement is Eswatini, which maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan rather than Beijing.

The policy marks a significant expansion of China’s trade engagement with Africa, now covering both Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and 20 additional non-LDC nations such as South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Kenya. These countries join the 33 LDCs that were already granted duty-free access in late 2024, effectively opening the Chinese market to nearly the entire continent.

Under the agreement, African exporters can ship goods to China without paying tariffs, a move expected to significantly reduce costs and improve competitiveness. Agricultural products such as coffee, avocados, and wine—previously subject to tariffs ranging from 8% to 30%—are expected to benefit the most from the new regime.

The policy is currently set to run until April 30, 2028, although Chinese authorities have indicated plans to transition toward longer-term trade arrangements under the China-Africa Economic Partnership for Shared Development framework.

The rollout has already begun to show early results, with the first shipment under the expanded policy—24 metric tons of South African apples—successfully clearing customs in Shenzhen on May 1, 2026.

Strategically, the move positions China as a major advocate of trade liberalization at a time when global trade tensions are rising. It also strengthens Beijing’s economic ties with Africa, offering new export opportunities for the continent while deepening its influence in global trade dynamics.
