Nigeria winger Samuel Chukwueze has credited AC Milan coach Rúben Amorim with restoring his confidence through regular playing time and a renewed role in the team.
Speaking to Footy-Africa while on international duty, Chukwueze said the Portuguese coach’s backing had helped him rediscover his belief after an uncertain period at the Italian club.
“Playing ninety minutes means he has confidence in me, and I have to keep showing the coach reasons to keep playing me,” he said.
The Super Eagles player has featured in Milan’s opening five Serie A matches, starting four and contributing two assists. He said his priority was to repay the manager’s faith through performances that help the team.
Chukwueze returned to Milan after a loan spell at Fulham, with the English club opting against making the move permanent. His future initially appeared uncertain, but Amorim identified a place for him in his plans.
The coach has deployed him as a right wing-back, a change from his more familiar attacking position. The role carries additional defensive responsibilities while allowing him to contribute going forward.
According to reporting by Corriere dello Sport, cited by SempreMilan, Amorim adjusted the team’s shape during the 3–0 victory over Lecce by moving Mario Gila towards right-back when Milan had possession.
The adjustment provided cover on Chukwueze’s side and gave the Nigerian greater freedom to attack. It illustrated how the coach is adapting the system to accommodate his strengths while maintaining defensive balance.
Chukwueze said the increased opportunities had made a clear difference to his confidence, and he hopes to sustain his improved form as he establishes himself in Amorim’s side.
