Columbus Crew have dismissed reserve team head coach Federico Higuaín following allegations that he physically intimidated and made a sexist remark to a female match official.
The incident occurred after an MLS NEXT Pro match between Columbus Crew 2 and Huntsville City FC.
According to the Professional Soccer Referees Association, the 41-year-old Argentine forcefully squeezed the official’s hand during a post-match interaction and refused to release it despite being asked to stop three times.
The referees’ union alleged that Higuaín told the official, “Don’t forget this is a man’s game,” while continuing to hold her hand.
Higuaín was shown a red card and initially suspended for two matches by the league. The PSRA subsequently criticized the punishment, arguing that it “fell drastically short” of demonstrating a commitment to providing a safe workplace for female match officials.
Reports indicated that Higuaín declined to accept responsibility or apologies during follow-up internal discussions with the club.
Columbus Crew General Manager Issa Tall later announced that the coach had been dismissed for cause, explaining that his conduct did not meet the leadership and behavioural standards expected by the organization.
The club’s decision ended Higuaín’s tenure as head coach of Columbus Crew 2 and marked a significant fall for one of the most recognizable figures in the team’s history.
Before moving into coaching, Higuaín spent eight seasons with the Columbus Crew first team, establishing himself as an influential attacker and a prominent figure at the club.
The incident has renewed discussions about the protection of match officials and the treatment of women working in professional football.
