The government has established a committee to regulate rental prices following increasing complaints from students about the high cost of private hostels near tertiary institutions across Ghana.
The decision comes after the President of the National Union of Ghana Students, Ibrahim Rashid, petitioned the Rent Control Department on 2 May 2026 over what he described as arbitrary and excessive charges imposed by hostel operators and landlords.
Mr Rashid highlighted the issue during an interview on Home Owner Show hosted by Dr Hanna Atiase.
The programme featured several tertiary students who shared concerns about the rising cost of accommodation around universities, describing the fees charged by some private hostel operators as unaffordable and unreasonable.
In response, Acting Rent Commissioner Fredrick Opoku visited a number of tertiary institutions to assess the situation firsthand.
Mr Opoku said the inspections revealed troubling conditions, noting that some hostel facilities had been shut down after breaches were identified.
According to the Rent Control Department, the concerns raised by students together with the petition from NUGS influenced the government’s decision to form a committee to regulate pricing within the rental sector.
The department also assured the public that hostel investors and landlords would be engaged in discussions aimed at finding lasting solutions to the issue.
